It's been so rainy this week! So wee took advantage of the morning at Kukio and Jeff did a little spearfishing before we were rained out and headed home. Here's the catch:

Magic Sands Aloha BBQ for Tina

We went to a beach at Magic Sands for Tina (one of Jeff's co-workers) aloha BBQ - it's her last week working at the Kona Dialysis Clinic. I was so busy enjoying the Picnic - all of the food and the company - that I completely forgot to take pictures until Jeff came back in from fishing and most everyone had already left! Oh well, Please enjoy the fishes!

Aloha Theatre Cafe, Finding Zen at Hononau, & A Hui Hou to my Maui girls

So, after some evening henna action, Jen got "asha", the sanskrit word for "hope" on her ankle, and having already decorated both of us, Archana did her own little design on the back of her hand...

It was a rainy day, so not much for beach time or hiking. So, we did what we do. We shopped.

But first, Breakfast at the Historic Aloha Theatre's Cafe.

Shopping around Kainaliu Town, between Kailua-Kona and Captian Cook.

Donkey Balls is a Hawaiian chain of chocolate covered macadamia nuts, that are pretty amazing. As well as hilariously named. Jen & Archana both bought some to take back to Maui.

Then a stop at Kealekekua to see the Captain Cook Monument,

and on to Hononau, where everything was re-opened!
No disrespect to the Hawaiian culture, we're just a bunch of goofballs....

Maui Girls visit Kukio - and pretend to be Top Models

We went to trusty ole Kukio - I know you're sick of it, but I'm not! - to go relax for the day, and so that Jeff could spearfish. Maui girls Jen & Archana loved visiting this beach and seeing the honu laying about, and our Kona friend Daniel joined us for the day. As always when the Maui girls are together, there are a surplus of silly photos. Love it.

Lapakahi Village

Welcome back! Well, after all of our adventures (and failed adventures) in Kohala, we stopped at one last place on the way back to Kona - Lapakahi State Historical Park in North Kohala. This park has a trail of just over 1 mile, takes about 45 minutes to walk, and there are brochures at the little building by the parking lot (and quite frankly, the cleanest, largest port-a-potty I've ever been in!). This trail contains the remains of an old Hawaiian Village, as well as some reconstructed pieces which include homes, religious structures, and places for daily tasks such as fishing and salt making. Please enjoy the walk-through!

(13) Family heiau - a religious site, where prayers and offerings were made.

(14) Ko'a - a fishing shrine, where offerings were left for abundance from the sea.

Konane (a Hawaiian game, similar to checkers)

This home had been occupied into the early 1900s.

(below) Salt making! Sea water was poured into these hollowed-out stones, and the sun evaporated the water, leaving a concentration of salt crystals. Salt was used to preserve fish and for food seasoning.

(8) Well - A dependable supply of drinking water allowed this particular area to be settled and plants to be grown. The lowering of the water table in the late 1800s may be one reason the people left Lapakahi.

(below) Ku'ula - Whether his catch was large or small, the fisherman always gave a portion to the fishing god who lived in this stone. In return, he received fish in abundance.

Kohala: BI's Oldest Volcano

Last time we lived here on the Big Island, we never traveled to Kohala. We traveled as far up as Hapuna Beach, and to Wimea, and all around the island - but somehow never to this northern-most part of the island. I suppose it was mostly because, well, there's not a whole lot up here. But what Jeff and I discovered today on our first trip to the oldest volcano on the big island was that what IS there is lovely, and quite different from anywhere else that we have been to on the Hawaiian islands yet. It never ceases to amaze me, that these small islands can be so vastly different in just a few miles. I hope you enjoy my road trip photos.

Drive Along the Kohala Ridge

Don't honk your horn! They say it may wake the sleeping volcano!

(Of course, as I read this in the car, Jeff immediately honks the horn. I should know better.)

In case you have not read the blog before, long story short, the trees actually grow sideways like this because of the strong, constant force of the wind in Waimea & Kohala area.

Okay, I can see how, at least on the blog, several of the next pictures are going to look like a whole lot of nothing. However, if you click on them to enlarge, you can *maybe* see a faint blue outline over the ocean, or through the sky and clouds. If you know what you are looking for - it was really hard to capture in a photo! But that faint outline? It's MAUI! only 30 miles away from the northernmost tip of the island.

(above) Does this statue look familiar? If so, it's because it is IDENTICAL to the one in downtown Honolulu on Oahu! There's a story in the blue book about the first one being lost at sea, then recommissioned, then some time later the original is recovered. Though I can't quite recall which is which..... I may have to look that up and get back to you on that.

Haha! There is a little sign that says 'No Passing' as we approach this one lane bridge. Well, duh! Jeff and I in unison: "It's like Road to Hana!"

After miles of towns, open fields, windy roads, all of the sudden there is a turn around one corner, and this breathtaking view....

Pololu Valley and Black Sand Beach

The next several photos are taken on the way down to the black sand beach that you can see at the bottom of the cliff. I will tell you right now - take a bottle of water, wear good shoes. Neither of which we did, of course, but that was because I was going by the blue book's "it's a 15 minute hike down, and if it takes you 15 mintues to come up, we'd be proud because that means you didn't stop" (i'm paraphrasing a bit). So, 15 minute walk/hike. The truth. You will stop several times on the walk down because it is breathtaking. And you will stop several more times on the way back because, well, YOU'RE CLIMBING A CLIFF, SILLY! It's not a really hard hike, but it is steep to go back up, and in the afternoon quite sunny and very tiring. You may, when you get out of your car, feel cold and that you may need a sweater or pants on. Don't do it. Once you get going, you will not be cold at all, I promise. And I get cold when it's below 80 degrees.

Okay, now that you have been properly warned, we can continue.....

The sand on this beach is amazing. Black sand beaches are made from (a) molten lava hitting the cold ocean water, instantly breaking apart and turning into black sand, or (b) water slowly chipping away at the lava rocks, breaking it into grains of sand. This beach is formed by process B.

By now I have been on quite a few beaches, and 5 or so black sand beaches and this is absolutely the finest, softest sand of any beach I've ever walked on. It feels like..... like walking on a tempurpedic mattress! The sand just barely squishes under your feet but you can't feel a single grain of it, and forms around your foot, leaving a soft imprint that disappears back into the beach in moments. It was so cool.

Traveling Westward

The Kalahikiola Congregational Church of Kohala.
Built in 1855, the church was seriously damaged in a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in 2006. The church was rebuilt over the next few years, and rededicated in Feb. 2010. As I read on the website, the stone wall that surrounds the churchyard now, was built using stones from the the original church structure. The church was closed upon my visit, but someone was inside playing the piano, and it was a lovely moment.

from here, we tried to do 2 different trails and failed due to having a Malibu rental car, and not something 4wd that can handle the roads, so we'll have to go back another time, hopefully, and do the hike to the lighthouse and King Kamehameha's birthplace....

Kahaualea Natural Area Reserve - CLOSED!

Not that I went on this trail *ahem* - after all, it is "closed" -

but if I had gone on such a hike, the picture from it would probably look much like this.

After 4+ miles through tropical muddy woods of ever-changing terrain,

And then another 2-3 hours hike back - be sure not to get lost!

After about 10 minutes or so, we realize we passed our turn and went the wrong way. The very cool looking spiderweb across our path was one of our last giveaways to know it was time to turn around, and find where we went wrong - apparently we missed our fork in the road and had kept going straight, instead of turning left. So, after we found our fork, back we went, muddy and a bit tired of walking.

This was a BEAUTIFUL hike, and while we were not able to go to the cone or see flowing glowing orange lava, it was a great journey (if muddier than I'd like from the recent rain) and I really enjoyed all of the various trees and ferns (as I'm sure you can tell from the photos!). I would definitely recommend this trail - but of course, only if it is OPEN when you visit. :)

Kuki'o Beach with Jen

Back when we lived in Maui, we made a great friend named Jen who was also working on island as a traveler, but as a Physical Therapist. She quickly came into our little circle of friends, who, though still in Hawaii, we miss very much living over here on Big Island!

Well, lucky Jen was called upon to work over at the Kailua-Kona clinic on Friday, which meant she got to stay the whole weekend with us for her first time on the Big Island! Jen took most of the pictures while I enjoyed being a bit of a tour guide.

We started our Saturday morning off by going to Splashers! Grill on Ali'i drive for brunch, where I had had the best stuffed french toast 2 years ago (now in their new location down the street) and we enjoyed their Berry French Toast (split) w/ a side of Portuguese sausages and some scrambled eggs, Jen sipping her spicy Bloody Mary - yum! A perfect way to start the day!

Then, off to Kuki'o. I know, I know, you're sick of this beach, right? Well, the last time for a while, I swear! Jen mentioned wanting to see honu (green sea turtles) laying on the beach, and really there is no better place to see this. While I didn't take many pictures that day, I did have to pull out the camera for these guys.

Now, hopefully one of these days I will be able to steal some of Jen's pics that she took!

All Roads Lead To.....Kuki'o?

Okay! Wanted to check out a new fishing spot. To get here, you drive north of Kona, and turn left just before the road that takes you to Costco. The only problem was there is construction here on the wall, so we left. But first, we walked around a bit.... Later, I read in the Blue Book that there are a lot of trails, small pools and such around here, so I plan to go back sometime soon!

We walked down one of the paths for a while (if you go, take water!) to a little beach off the side where we found TONS of washed up urchin shells! In about 5 minutes within a 15 foot stretch of sand, we collected about 8 urchins - another reason to go back!

So, that beach being busted for our fishing goal of the day, we headed onward to the Hualalai Resort portion of Kuki'o Beach. This is a great spot to hang out, and if you take the first path off to the left from the parking lot, the sand is great, you're at the north end of Kuki'o, and the rocks along the northernmost side has some great diving of fishes.

However, today the waves were rolling and it was a little too dangerous for diving - noone wants to be smashed into rocks! And so, being already 1:30, itching to get in the water, and virtually right next door, back to our regular spot at Kuki'o we went for the day.

I did some swimming around the tidepool, and some fishing without much success. Jeff went spearfishing and got the two fish above, a _______ & a _______. (to be filled in later!)

Back to Kuki'o Beach!

Today we went to Kukio Beach for the first time in about 2 years. I have to say, I'm pretty sure that this is my favorite beach. It IS a man-made beach, and there are sandier beaches, and bigger crescent beaches, and cute hole-in-the-wall beaches, but this beach just has everything.

There's a tidepool with a sandy bottom that is perfect for families and children and if you're looking to just lounge and play in the water. There are sandy stretches where honu often sun themselves, lots of seashells to do some beach combing, rocks to fish off of and you'll always catch something (nothing huge, but something!) lots of good snorkeling - just be sure to wear your tabi and some gloves to help you get in and out of the water. You can kayak here and it even has a grassy area to picnic! Best yet, there are only 20 parking spaces here, so it's NEVER packed, and worse case is you can't get in. But if you can, it's the single best beach to spend the whole day.

This is *our* tree. :) It is the first place we put our stuff the very first time that we came to this beach, and its always the spot we look for when we arrive.

i love this. two years ago, this looked like a dinosaur skeleton to me. after that much time of water and weather, it looks more like the would-be skeleton of a skeksi (from the movie dark crystal)

Jeff and I both went snorkeling, Jeff with his Hawaiian Sling-spear in hand, and came back out with three fishes that we will happily eat for dinner one day. Until then, gutted and into the cooler they go!

What a wonderful and relaxing day! Swimming, snorkeling, beachcombing & some fish! Now a little relaxing under the tree and then home to nurse our sunburned backs!

Fishing at OTEC

We went fishing at OTEC, which is a beach area in North Kona. OTEC stands for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion, and this beach has large plastic pipelines out towards the beach. This isn't really a swimming beach, but it's definitely a fishing beach, as you go out towards the ends of the pipelines and fish off of the cliffs of lava. Today we fished, with not a lot of luck, but a really good time. I caught 4 fish, all of which got thrown back - too small or non edible. Ah well. Guess it's pasta & sausages for dinner instead of fish!

This is the first of two rock cod that I pulled up - the second one was a little bit bigger. Even so, you can eat rock cod, but they are a PAIN! They have tones of tiny little bones and spines and are more trouble than they are worth unless they are sizable, and even then i tend to pick them all apart with my fingers to feel for bones before eating them. So, back to the ocean, little guy.

Now this little red fish would be tasty - but way too small! Back into the ocean for this guy - grow up so I can eat you next time!

Now this was hilarious. all that stuff that looks like guts - that's really just the bait on my hook, so don't get freaked out. Poor little puffer fish was barely snagged on one of the barbs of the hook - not even the hook itself! and he was caught near his back fin - he didn't even eat it! Poor little confused puffer fish, back into the ocean for you!

Every single night that we have been here this week, when the sun gets low in the sky, Jeff and I stop whatever we are doing, and go out to the lanai to watch the sun set over the ocean. It's pure perfection every time, and we just watch in awe, knowing we are so lucky to be out here, and happy to be back on the Big Island, where our journey together first started.

Jeff worked in Wailuku today, and I had the day off, so I decided to go along and then spend the day around town and checking out Paia some more on my own.

First I stopped to take a pic of this lovely church in Wailuku, that had some interesting stained glass windows.

Then I made a stop in at Maui Beads of Paradise and checked out their gemstone and jewelry supply selection - also found out that they will be having a Trunk Show this weekend, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to get back to it. At any rate, they have really nice stuff and lots of gemstones in a cute little out-of-the-way shop that's really pleasant to go through. I will definitely be back!

Then, On to Paia. Went into a bunch of shops, found 2 dresses that i REALLY liked, that unfortunately did not fit me as well as I would have liked them to. Yes, I took pictures. Why? Cause they were cute! Plus, i could totally make the first one. And if i had a sewing machine here, I may have ventured to buy it anyway and just alter it a bit to fit better - but alas, no sewing machine, and i can't justify buying something to alter in another 3 months so that it's finally wearable. The 2nd dress i loved, looked great on me, but the small was just too big and they don't make an XS - not alterable. :( oh well....

Then more shopping around - had lunch at the outdoor seating section of the restaurant on the corner (the name is escaping me at the moment). I had a FANTASTIC Blackened Ahi Burritto that had a honey glaze over the top, and was even better than i thought that it would be, having never had mexican food containing fish before. However, i want to add, for if nothing else other than my own satisfaction, that my waitress was AWFUL. Had the food not been so good, I wouldn't have gone back. She was training another waitress, and while she checked in numerous times with the tables around me, I was left to sit for almost 10 minutes before being given a menue, another almost 10 till i got my glass of water, never checked back on after my food arrived, had to stop and ask her for a box and to ask for my napkin twice, my check, everything. Clearly, she didn't think that a single girl at the restaurant was going to tip her well and neglected to provide even normal service - and with crappy service like that, you can't bet that I didn't (and I always tip, and pretty well at that, since I've waitressed before). However, the food really was excellent - I'll assume the poor service was a fluke. She seemed, after all, perfectly nice to everyone else.

Next was another bead store, Aloha Bead Co., a small-ish shop split into 2 seperate rooms - one for gemstone type beads, the other for glass and crystal beads. For me, who Only really works with gemstones - this was fantasic - I didn't even have to bother with the other stuff. However, each of the two stores are quite small and packed with gemstones - great for selection, tricky for mobility and relaxed browsing. Seemed nice enough, a little expensive, but they were having a great sale on some beads out in the hallway, 1/2 off a few different things, so i bought a strand of pretty faceted iolite gemstones that I'm really looking forward to working with - for less than $20. Happy girl.

With a bit of the day left to kill, I went to Paia Beach just down the street and enjoyed the mostly-secluded stretch of sand for a little while, even though the day was cooling down by this point. I got some great pictures of the evening sun, however, and collected a few Eye of Shiva Shells that seemed to be everywhere on the sand (small white round shells with a spiral design in them).

With some more time to kill, I checked out the Queen Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center for a while, then met Jeff and Simon at work and went to Kahalui Ale House for some Guinness and pool - you know Jeff was a happy camper! Probably the last time I'll get to see Simon since I work on Friday, and that's the day he's heading back to Oahu. But that's okay, we'll catch up again soon.

After checking out Makalua-puna Point in Kapalua (in West Maui), we unexpectedly found the White Coral Chartres Labyrinth! So beautiful, and we took our time to walk through the path, lay an offering in the center, and walk back out. What a serene and surreal fealing to walk a sacred space right on the shores of Maui with these beautiful views - you can't help but feel a connection with the land!

Valentine's Day

Valentines Day with friends at Kanaha Beach Park in Kahalui (Central Maui).

Everyone got to meet Katie and we had a great cookout and lunch of steak on the grill (by simon!), shoyu and hawaiian poke, crackers, cheese, and a variety of beer. Talked story and ate, then checked out the water which was horribly murky.

Sarah and Katie's masks were both broken, but after going out in the water for 5-10 minutes I came back b/c it didn't get any clearer by swimming out farther - could just see to the end of my outstreatched hand - so we just hung out and talked, and enjoyed the view and all of the wind- and kite-surfers Boys came back shortly after, realizing the reef wasn't any better either so no spearfishing for the day.

So, the water was a bust, but the day was fantastic - such a great time with friends.

Afterwards, Simon, Jeff and I went to the movies and saw Wolfman which was really fun!

So, perhaps an unconventional Valentines Day for a couple since we didn't do the 'go out on a date/dinner' kind of thing, but we had such a great day with our friends, I'd take that any day! (Well, almost. Rain check on the date night....)
